Our story
Made for real trips,
not just nice photos.
That line is on our homepage. This page is where we explain what it actually costs us to mean it.
Why we exist
Most outdoor gear is sold by people who don't use it
The outdoor category has a specific problem. The marketing is built around a version of the outdoors that almost nobody actually lives — golden light, an empty ridgeline, gear that never gets muddy. Then the thing turns up, and it's a rebadged generic with a mountain printed on the box.
We started True North Supply Co because the gap between the photo and the product had got ridiculous.
So the whole operation is built backwards from one question: would we take this on a trip ourselves, knowing we'd be stuck with it if it failed? If the answer is no, it doesn't get listed. That rules out a lot of products that would sell perfectly well.
We'd rather stock four things we'd defend than forty we'd have to explain.
The filter
How gear earns a place here
Every product we consider gets put through the same four questions. Most don't survive the first two.
Does the spec sheet actually say that?
Suppliers inflate numbers routinely — lumens, waterproof ratings, R-values, battery life. If a claim isn't on the manufacturer's technical documentation, it doesn't go on our product page. That's why some of our listings say less than our competitors' do.
What happens when it fails?
Everything fails eventually. What matters is whether it fails safely and predictably, or leaves you stranded. We'd rather a light that dims gradually than one that dies at full brightness with no warning.
Is it better, or just newer?
Plenty of gear adds features nobody asked for and calls it an upgrade. We look for products that do one job properly, not five jobs adequately with an app attached.
Would we pay this ourselves?
The last test, and the one that kills the most products. Good margin on something we wouldn't personally buy isn't a business we want to run.
If a product clears all four, we list it. If it clears three, we don't — and we've walked away from suppliers over exactly that.
On the range
The catalogue is small on purpose
We're not trying to be the shop that has everything. Marketplaces already do that, and they do it cheaper than we ever could.
What we're trying to be is the shop where you don't have to research the purchase. If it's on the site, we've already done the comparison, read the spec sheet, and decided it's the one we'd take. The range grows slowly because that work takes time.
Our commitments
Things we won't do to sell you something
Standard practice in this category, all of it. None of it happens here.
-
Invented reviews Every review on this site comes from a verified order. When a product is new, it has no reviews — we'd rather show an empty space than a fake five star.
-
Countdown timers that reset No fake scarcity, no "3 people are viewing this", no timer that starts again when you reload the page. If a sale ends, it ends.
-
Specs we can't back If we can't point to the manufacturer's documentation for a number, we don't print the number. Sometimes that means our listing looks less impressive than it could.
-
Returns policies designed to be failed No restocking traps on faulty goods, no 14-day windows that expire before delivery. Thirty days, plainly written, and your statutory rights sit above it regardless.
